We're buzzing about saving the bees!

We absolutely LOVE bees and they're also extremely important for us as humans. They play a vital role in pollinating our crops - they are the farmers' best friends and save £2bn every year in artificial crop pollination. Without bees, food would be more expensive to produce and buy and we'd all suffer - the farming sector and us consumers.

"It’s tempting to think bees just provide us with honey – but in fact they’re behind much of the food we eat, including most fruit and vegetables" Friends of the Earth

BBC presenter Zoe Ball has launched the 'Big Bee Challenge' and is giving us all advice on how to Save The Bees...

  • Plant nectar-rich flowers

  • Plant bee-friendly herbs such as thyme, lavender and rosemary

  • Provide bee hotels (this could be simply hollow wood or a bark-rich environment)

  • Provide a water source

  • Grow wildflowers - it's a bee buffet!

  • Talk to children about the importance of bees

Some extra bee-friendly flowers include:

  • Lavender

  • Scabiosa

  • Rhodanthemum

  • Ceonothus

Did you know that there are over 270 species of bee in the UK?!
